THE TOUR PARTICIPANT LIMIT HAS BEEN REACHED. PLEASE JOIN US RODGER’S ON JULY 21ST AT 6:30PM AT THE BRIGHTON FIRE STATION FOR A PRESENTATION ON THE GEOLOGICAL HISTORY OF BIG COTTONWOOD AND FOR HIS MONTHLY GEOLOGY TOUR OF SOLITUDE MOUNTAIN RESORT.
When driving up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the town of Brighton, you are embarking on an 800-million-year journey through geologic time. The oldest rocks exposed in the canyon are found near its mouth and as your travel up canyon the strata get younger in age. The sedimentary sequence exposed in the canyon presents an interesting historical story of this part of the North American Tectonic plate.
This road tour of Big Cottonwood Canyon will visit several formations in the canyon that shed light on this interesting history. A discussion of the mountain building process including the formation of the rich ore deposits exploited for silver will be addressed and how the mining ventures played an important role in the ability for Brighton and Solitude Mountain Resort to be located within the National Forest.
We will carpool. This FREE tour is limited to 20 people. Reserve your spot here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/in-canyon-geology-tour-with-rodger-fry-tickets-358830330177
Tour will meet at the Big Cottonwood Canyon Park and Ride lot at the mouth of the canyon, in the west end of the parking lot.
