Painting Mountains & Canyons Employing Atmospheric Perspective

  • Brighton Fire Station #108 7688 South Big Cottonwood Canyon Road Brighton, UT, 84121 United States (map)

Mountains and canyons surround us in the Salt Lake Valley and are endlessly challenging to paint! I will focus on creating distance in your paintings through the use of receding color values and lessening of detail ("atmospheric perspective").

For participants, it would be helpful to know basic watercolor techniques like wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry. Also, to know how to mix colors from basic pigments and differentiate between "warm" and "cool" colors.

*All supplies will be provided for use during the class.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. The workshop is limited to 12 people. A voluntary donation of $25 is requested to cover the cost of supplies.

Eileen Vestal is a native of New York State with a 33-year career teaching art K-12, in facilities for juvenile felons, and at a community college.

She works in watercolors and acrylics, painting mostly landscapes. Her Master’s Degree from Rochester Institute of Technology is in Education with a painting major.

Since retiring, she paints nearly every day, takes classes, shows locally, and paints outdoors frequently. Her mantra is the adage "It takes 10,000 hours of practice to be good at something" and she has earned her skills through trial and error! Experience and painting with other painters have taught her many things, but she is definitely still learning.
